The Summer Slide!!!

The summer slide refers to the learning loss that many children experience during the summer break when they are not engaged in regular academic activities. This loss is especially significant in the early elementary years, such as grades 1 and 2, because children at this stage are developing essential foundational skills in reading, writing, and math. Without consistent practice, students can lose up to two to three months of progress, particularly in reading fluency and basic math skills like addition and subtraction.

Avoiding the summer slide in grades 1 and 2 is crucial because these years lay the groundwork for future academic success. Children who fall behind during the summer may struggle to catch up when school resumes, leading to frustration, lower confidence, and missed opportunities to build on what they’ve already learned. Instead of starting the new school year ready to tackle new concepts, they may need to spend valuable time re-learning material from the previous grade.

Preventing the summer slide helps children stay academically confident and keeps their skills sharp. By incorporating fun and engaging learning activities into daily routines—like reading books, writing in a journal, playing math games, or exploring nature—families can help students maintain their progress and be better prepared for the challenges of the upcoming school year.

In an effort to help prevent the "summer slide," our teachers have prepared a summer packet for your child to complete over the break. The packet will be collected when we return to school in September. Thank you for your support, and have a wonderful summer!
